Polydioxanone (PDO) is a synthetic, biodegradable, and bioabsorbable suture material commonly used in various surgical and medical procedures. It belongs to the family of synthetic polymers known as polyesters and is highly regarded for its exceptional properties and versatility in healthcare applications.
Biodegradability and Bioabsorbability: PDO is designed to be biodegradable, meaning it can break down into simpler, non-toxic components over time. The process of biodegradation occurs through hydrolysis, where water breaks down the polymer chain into smaller molecules. As PDO degrades, it eventually gets absorbed by the body’s natural processes, eliminating the need for suture removal.
