CHROMIC CATGUT

Chromic catgut is a type of absorbable surgical suture made from the submucosal layer of the small intestine of sheep or other animals. The term “catgut” can be misleading, as this material is not derived from cat intestines; it is believed to have originated from an old term for any type of cord or string-like material. The term “chromic” refers to the treatment of the catgut with chromic salts, which increases its resistance to enzymatic degradation and prolongs its absorption time.

Absorbable Nature: Chromic catgut is an absorbable suture material, meaning that it gradually breaks down within the body over time. This characteristic eliminates the need for suture removal, reducing patient discomfort and the risk of infection associated with non-absorbable sutures.
